I left my heart

I'm heading to San Francisco tomorrow to spend the turning of the new year with my closest college girlfriends. I'm ridiculously excited and just wanted to send you all my very best wishes for an extra fabulous new years yourselves... weather it be an intimate affair with loved ones or in a room full of giddy strangers dancing to silly music and kissing each other at the stroke of midnight.

Here's to all good things for everyone in 2010... especially L-O-V-E. I have a good feeling I just may leave my heart in San Francisco.

Love Note from Diablo & Dan

Our Hello Super 8 movie is a true gift. Instead of a wedding video, we got a work of art; in a lot of ways, its the most important film we'll ever see. Megan's sample movies are enough to evoke tears; so you can just imagine the emotional impact of watching your own film. Her impeccable taste and timing creates personal documents that are by turns cool, compelling, funny and profound.

Ahead of the game for 2010

I've always had a love affair with the color turquoise, and it seemed fitting to have my favorite color represent my company. It is the color of water (my star sign in pisces) and sky (where my dream self floats off to daily) and evokes a sense of peace and tranquility. I also find it to be a vibrant, happy color. So being all those things, I felt like turquoise was the perfect color for the Hello Super 8 brand.

And low and behold, we're ahead of the curve on this one. Pantone says that turquoise will be thee color of 2010! I hope that means it doesn't get played out but let me be the one to say... "I thought of it first!" HA!

Love note from Dan

Megan,

The video we got from you and Tatiana is breathtaking. When Keira's mother first suggested getting a videographer for our wedding, I was very skeptical. I had visions of awkward off-the-cuff well-wishes from tipsy family and friends, washed out colors, and shaky frames. When Keira showed me the Hello Super 8 samples on your website, those fears were assuaged. The dvd we got from you is one of my favorite things from our wedding. You and Tatiana did an amazing job capturing the spirit of the moment and how much fun everyone seemed to be having. It gives me such a good feeling to watch the video and think back on how amazing that day was for me. Thank you so much for the care you put into shooting and editing it. I love it.

Dan

Keira & Dan's wedding highlights

As I mentioned before, we had an amazing time at Keira & Dan's wedding held in Cambridge, MA last month. They were just the coolest couple and we loved all of their awesome friends and family. It was all about the details, the love between the two of them and most importantly, the fun! They picked out their own songs for the film and I can't tell you how perfect their choices were.

Here is the highlights film from the day (about 2 minutes). Enjoy!

New favorite blog: Missed Connections

There was a point in time when I used to read the Missed Connections on Craigslist for both for fun and curiosity. I was always fascinated, wondering if said missing person actually felt that connection too, then found the ad, then actually responded, then met the writer and then fell in love (sounds like a movie script waiting to happen).

And of course I always wondered if maybe someone had noticed me and thought we may have had a connection and posted an ad! And I'll admit, I've even looked on it when I thought I had a connection possibly on the Q train, walking our dogs in the park, in the nut aisle in Trader Joes. I'd never have the nerve to actually leave one but it's fun to fantasize.

In a sea of strangers in New York City, it's always nice to have those little innocent, unspoken moments with someone and wonder... could they be the one?

Enjoy this blog that I discovered today. I just love the artful interpretations of the ads illustrated by the talented Sophie Blackall. This brings brings me pure joy!

Venus Magazine Article: DIY filmmaking

I was interviewed along with Amy French (writer/director/actress), Hayley Stuart (indie filmmaker) and Celine Diano (indie film production designer) for Venus Magazine a couple months ago for their do-it-yourself article on filmmaking. We had a great time sharing thoughts, inspirations, and the trials and tribulations on making movies. It's a great read for anyone interested in getting their hands dirty and wanting to learn the art of making films... from commercial to art films to vintage super 8 films!

They also featured my top five vintage cameras. If you want to read the whole article, click here to download a pdf.

Fabulous NYC venue: The Norwood

I had the pleasure of attending a super fab wedding last night at the coolest spot ever and wanted to share. The place is a private club called The Norwood and conveniently located on 14th and 8th. It's a full brownstone and each floor is gorgeously decorated. It was the perfect spot for an intimate celebration.

The first floor was a cool lounge/bar area with tons of seating nooks, complete with great art on the walls. There was an lovely garden in the back where softly lit lanterns hung from a huge tree. One flight up was the dining room with big long tables and a kitchen area in the back. And up one more flight was the "club" which had a fantastic bar and little dance floor. Again more cool art and great lighting. Oh and the staff were all very attractive to boot! I never thought I'd be one to want a membership to a private club but hot dang, I wouldn't mind having one there!

Halloween hilarity

I couldn't resist sharing my crazy costume for this year's Great Pupkin Contest (doggy costume contest). I was inspired by the NY landmark, B & H Photo Video... the epic Orthodox Jewish-run digital megastore. Only if you've been, will you truly understand. It's a bizarre place but one where I've spent many hours and many dollars on all the latest camera/video/photo equipment!

I dressed up like one of their awesome employees, complete with wig, beard, green vest, store logo, and photo I.D. That alone was pretty amazing. But to get my dog Arthur in on it, I dressed him up as an old Betamax video camera. The costume was titled "B&H Photo Clearance Stock."

I created graphics just like the camera and attached them to a box, then added a handle, an eye-piece, a bike light as the flashing "record" light and the cone of shame became the lens. It was a huge success and the crowd went wild for it. The competition was very stiff this year but we got 2nd place out of 85 dogs!!! We won some great prizes and I was quite pleased. I'm not sure how happy Arthur was about it, but he was a real trooper!

Best Boston Wedding

The season turned last weekend and the winter chill breezed on through, but that didn't stop one of our most favorite weddings ever! Keira and Dan were coolest couple with an amazing circle friends & family. You could tell how much you loved each other and how much everyone loved them and that always makes for an incredible wedding!

Their celebration was held at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge, MA — a lovely performance arts space built in 1814. It had that gorgeous historic charm but they transformed the theater into the hippest affair in town. The color pallet focused on pink dahlias with turquoise accents (soooo pretty!). I couldn't get over how many amazing details were thought through... from tons of great etsy finds to handmade headbands made by Keira's friend.

The ceremony was one of the best I've seen. Humorous, heartful and just plain lovely. I've never seen a groom take a photo from the altar. And I've never seen a bride so giggly and happy. I even shed a tear and fogged up my eyepiece!

We did the Hello Guestbook along with the photographers from Studio Nouveau and the guests went crazy for it. The wedding joy carried on through the night with a heated dance floor set to some great old school tunes. I can't wait to get back all of the footage!

Stay tuned...

Surreal retro film

I felt compelled to share this. It's an interesting experimental piece from the 60s and has that great vintage look (most likely shot on 16mm, I'm guessing from). I especially like the animated paper cutouts. If you wait until the end, you may be surprised. I was... it actually makes perfect sense but I had no idea one of my heroes created this!

Message for the day

Haddam, Connecticut wedding

Tatiana and I had the pleasure of attending Michelle and John's wedding in Connecticut a couple of weeks ago and we're waiting on pins and needles to get the footage back. They were such a fun and sweet couple and the setting was divine! The reception was held at The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station (this photo was the view from the balcony).

The lucky pair got the most gorgeous Saturday of the season... perfectly sunny with crystal blue skies and the leaves JUST starting to turn. From the setting to the flowers to the food to the rocking band, it was a fantastic wedding!

We'll be posting footage of the celebration as soon as we get our hands on it from the lab!

Pacific Northwest: now open for business!

Announcing our new addition to the Hello family, Ms. Wanna Camcam. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Wanna is a wonderful cinematographer with a keen eye. Having worked as a camera assistant on feature films under some of the great cinematographers of our day (Roger Deakins and Darius Khondji, anyone?) she is a self-proclaimed "camera nerd" and really knows her stuff. We are ecstatic to have her as part of our team and are thrilled to offer our services to those of you on the left coast.

So if you're located in the PNW, Wanna will come to you and film your wedding or family event. We will give your footage the special editing love back at headquarters in NYC and ship your final DVDs back to you. YAY!!

Vendor Spotlight: Angela Cappetta

Tatiana and I had the absolute pleasure of working with one of the most talented photographer's in NYC last month, Angela Cappetta. She was so much fun to work with and was true to my heart because she shot with real film too (on vintage cameras no less)! We were a little dream team, referring to ourselves as the "art department" for the day.

The groom from the wedding summed it up best by saying: "It felt like you were our oldest friends at the wedding."

Her photography is so unique... she has a truly artistic vision and is by no means your run of the mill wedding photographer. She's got an incredible eye and amazing energy to boot! I can't wait until we can do it again!!

FAMILY FILMS SITE LAUNCH!

We have officially launched our family films division today and want everyone to check it out. It has some new samples including a family film reel, a pregnancy and birth film, a celebrations film and a day in the life film... all great momentos of your family history!

Updates

We just filmed the most fantastic wedding last weekend at one of my most favorite places in the whole world... Coney Island. There is something magical about that place. It makes me completely giddy. From the thrills of the Cyclone and Wonder Wheel to the old carnies and bizarre patrons, the place just fascinates me. And let me tell you, it was an incredible backdrop for some sweet wedding shots.

(these photos taken a few years back)

I'm DYING to get the footage back. The worst part about this job is the wait. You can see how it will all look in your mind's eye but really have no clue until you get that little mini-DV back from the lab and get to watch it for the first time. It's kinda like Christmas. You have no idea what's inside the package but when you see if for the first time, your eyes light up. Such a fun feeling.

In the meantime, Tatiana and I will be heading to London for a shoot for 10 days. It'll be great to see all my old pals while working on a cool production. We're excited!

Then it's back home for a wedding we're looking forward to in Connecticut. I'm hoping for some fall foliage to appear by that time. Will make for some gorgeous shots. Until next time...

8 one year olds + a first birthday = cuteness overload!

I had the chance to film a group celebration of 8 one year olds' first birthday party last month in Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn (my home turf!) and it was a blast. The mothers were an amazing group of women who put together quite the bash. It was complete with homemade cupcakes and snacks, pizza, spiked punch (for the adults of course) and a band leading the sweetest sing-a-long. Even if the kids don't remember it, they'll have this as a momento of the day:

Nellie & Tyler's wedding highlights: Martha's Vineyard

Nellie & Tyler's wedding was one of the coolest, most laid back yet rockin' weddings I've been to. They met years ago in Edgartown, MA on the lovely island of Martha's Vineyard. So they decided it was fitting to wed in the same place. What a lovely lovely place! It was so great to chill out and ride bikes the day before the wedding and get to know some of the guests staying in the local hotel.

Their big day was great. A lovely ceremony at the lighthouse followed by a crazy dance party in a tent behind their house. Can I just say that their guests know how to party? Everyone was on form on the dance floor that night, rocking that tent!

Here are some of the highlights from the day into night set to one of their favorite songs played at their wedding:

Introducing Video Birth Announcements!

We are so excited about our latest endeavor... birth announcements on super 8 film! We haven't rolled out our Kids & Family branch just yet on the website BUT we couldn't wait to show you our first pregnancy and birth film.

We captured Olia & Yury's wedding last July and POOF! a little one was on the way shortly there after. :) I was lucky enough to be invited over to film Olia in early labor, just hours before she went to the hospital. 2 days later, the proud poppa Yury called me to say I could come to the hospital to film little Isaiah and his very first visitors. It was AMAZING to be there and witness such a lovely family moment. And Isaiah is one of the cutest newborns I've ever seen.

Congratulations to the happy new family...

Family films

I've been playing around filming children to add a kids and family addition to Hello Super 8. We not only want to do wedding films, we want to capture all important aspects of life and that includes childhood! We'll be rolling this out later this year but I wanted to give you a glimpse of the first little edit I put together.

This is the Usborne family, which I filmed one weekend this winter at their country home in Sussex, England. Those are some pretty cute kids if you ask me. :)

I had the pleasure of working along side the wonderfully talented Miami-based photographer, Trevor Goldsmith last week. He was a awesome to work with (very laid back with great attention to detail and really got the shots). Be sure to check out his work (he's available worldwide!).

He's already posted some shots from Hannah and Alan's wedding on his blog. How amazing is her dress (and that ocean!)?

Married in Miami

Hello everyone. I just returned from a fabulous journey to Miami to film the lovely couple, Hannah and Alan's beautifully intimate celebration. The weather could not have been more ideal. Perfect warm sunshine with a cool ocean breeze.

The wedding was held at the fabulous Tides Hotel. The hotel was extremely chic, perfect for the design-savvy couple's weddings. Hannah, a designer herself, created a gorgeous identity for the day, with inspired programs, menus, place cards, etc. I was very impressed with her attention to detail and the day went off without a hitch.

The ceremony started in the penthouse, then moved to the roof for cocktails. The whole party then headed down to the beach for some sunset photos and then back to the penthouse for a quiet dinner. Everyone was so warm and welcoming and I was thrilled to be a part of such a great family gathering. I can't wait see the film and edit it (stay tuned).

Before the taxi came to take me back to the airport, I spent my last hours on the beach, soaking up the rays and reflecting on the beauty of the previous day's events, before heading back to rain-soaked New York.

The B-List event

We had the pleasure of attending the B-List wedding bloggers event this past Saturday in Dumbo. It was lovely to meet some of the writers of the blogs that we follow religiously. Everyone was super friendly and it was so nice to "talk shop" in person rather than in email windows.

It was equally great to meet some fellow NY wedding vendors and swap stories and share tips. It's so nice to be in a warm and welcoming community of people! It really seems as though this community of vendors and bloggers love what they do and because of that, it created a positive atmosphere being around others who share the same passions and design aesthetics. We're thrilled to continue growing our relationships with everyone we met.

Special thanks and shout outs to Vané and Anne, who hosted such an excellent event!

Papyrus Bridal Event

Greetings fellow bloggers! Alas, my first contribution to our Hello Super 8 blog!

On Sunday March 15th, I was lucky to be invited to an in-store bridal event at Papyrus, hosted by Anna Krzelj at their Soho branch in Manhattan. There, I shared the exhibition space with an array of other awesome and talented people in the wedding business.

As fellow film enthusiasts naturally gravitate towards one another, I first met Erik Ekroth who I immediately saw has a great eye for still photography.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Jessie Weidinger, of Rountree Flowers, a floral arranger from New England. Her eye for color coordination is incredible, definitely check out her website!

Also at the event were three young ladies who go by the name Nina's Music Book. They set the mood for the whole day, playing gorgeous harp and violin music.

And last, but not least, I chatted with the lady who hosted the most colorful table at the event, arranged with all kinds of candies and pink monkeys! Michelle Tuccillo of Pink Monkey Events has a ton of experience and sure knows how to throw a party. Many thanks to Anna Krzelj and Papyrus for inviting Hello Super 8 to partake in this event!

Super 8 at the Sinatra Estate!

What an amazingly cool setting for a wedding—perfect for such a cool couple!

It was a dream to soak up the warm sunshine of the Palm Springs desert. California light is like none other, and ideal for shooting film. All those gorgeous retro-modern sensibilities had me drooling - from the homes to the furniture shops to the vintage Cadillacs cruising down the strip.

Hanging out at the Old Blue Eyes' estate was a treat. The day was spectacular and the attention to detail was immaculate, thanks to the wonderful Emily Kelly of Unscene, Inc.. Feast your eyes on this fantastic wedding:

Tessa & Greg's London wedding

Here are a few highlights from a superb wedding shot in London last year. They were keen to have black and white film as they thought it would add to the London vibe, and I think they were right!

Setting the scene was really fun— lived in a very cool area called Shoreditch which was full of street art (Banksy, Shepard Fairy, etc) which was excellent to capture. The wedding itself was a lovely day full of very welcoming friends and family.

Here is a glimpse of the day (set to one of my all-time favorite songs by Nina Simone):

Straight 8

I was just informed of the coolest film contest EVER. It's called Straight 8 and they are based in London. The concept is simple... anyone can enter. You just need to shoot roll (cartridge) of super 8 film, no editing, no re-takes and then send in the un-developed cartridge with a song/soundtrack you think might go with your film. The filmmakers never get a chance to see what they've done UNTIL the day they are projected (if they are chosen as a winner)! How friggin' cool is that?

Some of the results are stunning! Check out some of the films here.

This one in particular is lovely and amazing:

How did that do that IN camera? I love it! I think we should enter next year. :)

Update from London

Hello!
I'm currently in London setting up shop over here. We've been busy busy busy getting all of our promotional materials ready to get the word out about Super 8 films!

Super 8 wedding films are relatively unknown over here so we've got our work cut out for us getting people hip to the fact that they can have their wedding filmed in a cool way! Cheesy videos are still the norm here but we're ready to SHOUT FROM THE ROOFTOPS, letting people know that there IS a way to have your day beautifully shot, in an artful, cool and fun way.

A couple weeks ago, I spent my Saturday learning how to hand-process super 8 film at this very cool place called no.w.here. They are a of individuals dedicated to art of the moving image. The instructor, James Holcombe was a very passionate film artist and educator who really knew his stuff. He mainly worked with experimental film processing and showed us some super exciting examples... mostly French artists who had messed with different processes and got really cool results. Granted, I don't think many brides would want to see their wedding in bright green tones or ultra contrasty almost unrecognizable black and white but as art pieces they were very cool and super inspiring!

We went out shot a few rolls around Shoreditch, then came back and learned how to take the film from the cartridge onto spools in a dark room, then added a 3 chemical process, and then let the film dry on antiquated wire racks with clothes pins. It was so hands-on and I LOVED IT! Just like my old dark room days of photography. Granted, it's much easier to drop off your film to a lab and have it come back on a cool little mini-DV and pop it into the computer, BUT learning how it's done and doing it ourselves was fascinating.

After the film was dry, we threaded our masterpieces into an old projector and watched our films. It was lovely to have that "instant" gratification. Not quite DIGITAL but shooting that day and watching it in a few hours was amazing. Bright red London buses, gorgeous fluffy white clouds against blue skies, flapping wings of pigeons with a quarter open shutter, a cyclist in slow motion moving down Brick Lane, a florescent green kabab stand all in saturated grainy gorgeousness. I HEART SUPER 8! And so should you. :)

Hello Guestbook

The "hello guestbook" is the coolest and most fun thing you could have at your event! Photo booths have been "the it item" at weddings but imagine having a memento of your friends and family in MOTION! Everyone has a blast creating messages for you and they can really let their creativity go wild.

We set up a camera on a tripod, lights, a backdrop and a message station in an inconspicuous area of your event and let the creativity unfold.

What words of wisdom will sweet Grandma Mabel pass on to you?
How will your friend Jill, the modern dancer, interpret her love for you?
What kind of brilliant creation will Amy the artist concoct for you?
How will your witty Uncle Joe embarrass you?
The list is endless.
