I loved the idea of using a blog template for the new site as you are all used to reading wedding blogs and it just makes a lot of sense for ease of updating. It's nice and clean and has all the info you want from Hello Super 8.

Terra & Kevin's Marin, CA super 8 wedding film

Terra and Kevin wed in the misty hills of Marin, just over the Golden Gate Bridge. The Headland Center of the Arts was the perfect setting for their intimate ceremony and fun reception. The stylish couple pulled out all the stops for their rustic themed celebration. They were both so so happy that day and I think this little film captures their affection for one another perfectly.

Ashley & Drew's rainbow-tastic beach/ranch wedding

It's hard picking favorite weddings because they all have their own unique qualities, but Ashley and Drew's Dos Pueblos Ranch wedding in Santa Barbara, CA was really something special. It combined so many elements that I personally love including a beautiful barefoot ceremony on the beach, a raucous barn reception, a rainbow color theme (yay rainbows!), delicious food, AND tons of amazing music. There was so much thought in all of the details... for example, the tables were named after albums with COLORS in their titles (like Yellow Submarine, Purple Rain, Back in Black, In Rainbows). And the amazing event designer, Tricia Fountaine crafted the event spectacularly (hello found drift wood chandeliers). I could go on and on but it really was a particularly grand day.

a visit to Putney House, Vermont (super 8 film)

I was invited to my friend's family vacation home in Vermont last month and decided to take along my trusty super 8 camera and a roll of film. The setting was absolutely amazing and the house, well, let's just say it was kind of my dream house. An architectural wonder on acres and acres of pristine wooded Vermont goodness. A small group of us explored the house and the grounds and this is just a little fun something I shot along the way, set to a perty song. :)

(Oh, and in case you're wondering, my friends don't have bad fashion sense... the orange hats/vests were for hunting season).

Rachel & Chris' Blue Hill at Stone Barns wedding

Rachel & Chris' affair was wedding perfection! Every little detail was executed with the utmost thought and care. The dress! The flowers! The food! The music! The setting! That cake! And the love between the two of them was palpable. They were so sweet with each other but also completely fun-loving. One can only dream of wedding magic like this one.

Sneak Peek: October Weddings

Today we got the footage from two lovely October weddings. We just cannot wait to start editing this beautiful footage. Here is a little teaser of what you'll see soon on the blog!

First off, we have Terra and Kevin's rustic Northern California wedding. The rolling hills of the Marin Headlands provided a truly picturesque backdrop for this idyllic ceremony. The misty climate created the perfect romantic atmosphere for their sweet celebration held at the Headlands Center for the Arts.

Next, was Patty and Chris's delightful wedding right here in Brooklyn, New York. The ceremony was held at St. Bartholomew's Cathedral in Brooklyn Heights. From there, the wedding party took a water taxi where they toasted the couple while cruising the East River at sunset. The party continued at Bridgewaters across the river, where the guests dined and danced amongst rose colored accents and candlelight.

Megan,

The video is beyond amazing, just awesome. We are so happy with the final product!!! The songs fit so well with the mood (David Bowie during the dancing was perfect!!!) of the day and the film is a true representation of how much fun our wedding day was!! Ugh, just so emotional and giddy watching this film. I'm so happy to have shared our day with you and have this film with us for the rest of our lives!

The packaging was sweet as well!!!

Megan & Ciaran's Goshen NY wedding

Megan & Ciaran celebrated their lovely wedding at the historic Harness Museum and race track in Goshen, NY (outside of NYC). Weddings aren't the first thing that come to mind when one thinks of a race track, but these pristine racing grounds provided a picture-perfect backdrop for Megan and Ciaran's ceremony.

Megan made an amazing effort at getting all of her details just right. The couple gave adorable personalized mini-planters to their guests as wedding favors so that they could take a bit of the charming decor home with them. The bride's choice of beautiful cerulean mason jar vases impeccably complimented her blush and coral flower arrangements. The festivity culminated with an absolutely dazzling sparkler send-off. Everything at this wedding was perfection!

Back from Cali

We just spent another great weekend in Santa Barbara, CA filming another great wedding! The weather was ideal (we love you West Coast!) and made for perfect shooting conditions. You West Coast filmmakers sure have it easy. ;)

My assistant, Michael snapped these photos on his phone of the lovely couple (not bad for cell images). Love that golden hour light!

Back at Brooklyn headquarters, we are busy editing all the great weddings from late summer and early fall but everything is looking FANTASTIC! What a great year for amazing celebrations. Stay tuned for our end of year newsletter wrap-up.

I Love LA: super 8 promo film

When asked to create a super 8 promo film that was a "love letter to the youth of Los Angeles" for the company Ku De Ta, I jumped at the chance! I had such an amazing time going around with my trusty super 8, shooting all the things I love about LA. The warm, saturated images along with that yummy hip hop track = pure goodness. And I gotta say... that last shot gives me goosebumps (time lapse sunset y'all!).

Ok, so I just have to say... my job is rad. Seriously. I am still in awe that I get to travel to the coolest places and capture the biggest moments of the greatest couples' lives. So yeah. Just sayin'.

Kate & Ross's wedding was no exception. Their wedding day was truly inspiring for me. When the best of the best all comes together, I'm basically smiling from ear to ear all day, pressing my little camera trigger here, there and everywhere I see beauty. I shot way more film than I intended to that day because the gorgeousness didn't stop! First of all, Kate and Ross are two hotties! Their style was smashing. Classy and tasteful. The details of the day were perfection. The location stunning. The weather fantabulous. And let's just say, they were by no means camera shy. I was a very happy little cinematographer that day. And I think this highlights film from their day tells it all...

Willem's First Birthday: Super 8 Film

Hello Super 8 Proudly Presents: Willem's First Birthday. We had the privilege of capturing this adorable little tyke's very special gathering in New York, New York. First birthdays are no small matter and parents Lora and JJ pulled out all the stops for their pride and joy. From the embroidered party hats to the miniature cupcakes this was a first birthday party that won't soon be forgot!

After the festivities concluded, Mom, Dad and Willem went out for a stroll and some family bonding in the park. Little Willem just bubbles over with excitement in the exhilaration of swinging. So precious.

Darcy & Will's Alexandria Wedding

When comes to combining comfort with elegance, it's pretty difficult to compete with the South. We went down to Alexandria, VA to capture the rollicking union of Darcy and Will. Their outdoor ceremony took place in the backyard of a scenic Virgina manor and was replete with details that ensured the comfort of their guests while maintaining southern charm. We especially liked the wicker fans at the "cooling station" and the Scarlett O'Hara-esqe sun parasols. The bridal party all donned flip-flops rather than heels under their floral sundresses, a choice that undoubtedly paid off on the dance floor!

Weekly Wedding Round-Up: Feathers, Fedoras, and Fenders, Oh My!

It's round-up time again! Here are some of our favorite wedding details from the week!

First up, we have a lovely affair that is teeming with lavish peacock plumes.

We've come undone over these darling button details.

The 1920's roared back right back into our hearts after viewing this Gatsby-inspired wedding.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom could keep us away from these adorable, postage themed invitations.

Finally, we just love the color palette of this ceremony. From the slate grey, to the muted pink, to the vibrancy of the vehicle, few couples can boast looking this good from the waist down.

Chase & Tate's Aspen, CO wedding

We had the honor of traveling to the gorgeous setting of Aspen, CO to shoot the quirky, woodsy, wonderful wedding of Chase and Tate. This breathtaking affair featured both original details, such as the bride's beautifully bedazzled footwear, and stunning backdrops consisting of both pristine lakes and evergreen forests.

The ceremony was truly a family affair from Chase's own DIY touches, to the assortment of handmade pies made by her brother, to the setting of the wedding itself, which took place in the backyard of a family friend. The attention custom-made details of this outdoor ceremony added a marvelous feel to this free-spirited fête.

Sneak Peek: Summer Weddings

Today the film from four of our summer shoots arrived from the lab! We're super excited to start work on editing all of this gorgeous footage. Here's a tantalizing little teaser of what's to come!

1. In early August, we filmed the most charming wedding in Goshen, NY. Holding the ceremony at a Historic Harness Racetrack ensured Megan and Ciaran's that their wedding would be as merry as a day at the races.

2. Over on the West Coast, Kate and Ross had a picturesque affair in a stunning Victorian manor in Healdsburg, California (wine country). It's easy to see by these photos that the happy couple and their guests had a ball at this incredible destination wedding.

California dreamin'

For the last week, I've had the privilege of working in some of the coolest spots on the West Coast. It all started last weekend up in the gorgeous town of Healdsburg, in Sonoma county, capturing the fantastic wedding of Kate and Ross. I was truly inspired that day. From the perfect summer weather, to the fantastic views of wine country, to the exquisite details at the wedding to the super fun couple (not to mention their rowdy friends and family), it was the perfect day!

I was then hired to shoot a promo film on super 8 for an up and coming company who specializes in the cultivation of young artists in Los Angeles. It was SO MUCH FUN driving all over LA finding shots that epitomize "youthful, artistic, LA." I cannot wait to get the footage back for that!

And today we're heading up to Santa Barbara for a wedding that I've been anxiously awaiting. The setting is spectacular and the couple, well... let's just say they have some unique and exciting ideas planned for their big day. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world!

BBC Reports on the Value of Home Movies & Real Film

Old-fashioned home movies, the kind on actual reels that sometimes turn up, unlabeled, in attics, are actually valuable sources of evidence about the way people lived in a certain time. As the BBC reports, the British Film Institute (BFI) and the BBC have teamed up to archive the historical tidbits that can be found in the background of old family films. They have requested family films, which will be used in the Home Movies Roadshow series.

In the article, "Would you rescue home movies from a burning house?", Robin Baker (head curator at the BFI) comments on the value of film and how home cinematographers only captured the key moments so as not to be wasteful, saying of video, "Now you can shoot all the time and the result can be rather long and boring. But with film they kept shots short because of the cost. The result is much more engaging and varied."

It's definitely true that shooting on film forces the filmmaker to be careful and economical; your eye always has to be out for the best moment to record permanently on film, and sometimes patience is a virtue. Instead of coming back from a wedding or event with hours and hours of video footage to wade through, searching for those special moments, we have already found them.

Nita & Rehan's Wave Hill wedding

Nita (hailing from Indonesia) & Rehan (an Indian Londoner) had a brilliant multi-cultural affair at the gorgeous Wave Hill, located in the Bronx, NY. The setting was fantastic and the weather turned out to be perfect. They were married in the picturesque gardens at sunset and the raucous reception followed in the grand Armor Hall.

We so impressed with the attention to all the fun design accents. Nita is a designer herself, so she spent a lot of time crafting the cute programs, menus, fans, table numbers, place settings... just about everything you could think of! There was so much love put into every little detail. We adored everything about this wedding... especially their fun guests' creativity for their message booth!

Megan,
I don’t know even know what to say. We just watched the movie, and tears were pouring down my face (and I didn’t even cry during the ceremony itself)! Your eye, your attention to detail and to beauty, the way you edited the footage, the Super8 film itself— all of it came together in such a magical way, more emotional and intense than I could have dreamed. We both absolutely love the way you integrated our songs into the film; it feels so seamless and right. You somehow managed to include everything and everyone without making the camera obtrusive or even noticeable.

And what can I say about the package itself? Little did I know I would need the kleenex :) Adorable and beyond aesthetically pleasing.

Thank you thank you thank from the bottom of our hearts for giving us this perfect piece of art and for being so much FUN at our wedding. You definitely should be proud of this— it’s brilliant.

Weekly Wedding Round-up: Burgers and Save the Dates

In-N-Out at a wedding? An adorable dog posing for a Save the Date shoot? These are just a few of the amazing items we pulled from the world of weddings this week:

This DIY backyard wedding, which already wins points for the cute and colorful decor, also featured fish tacos and an In-N-Out truck! That is definitely some wedding grub we can get behind.
An incredibly vintage glam wedding had framed records as tablets for the guests to leave their messages for the bride & groom. They will undoubtedly make amazing pieces of art in the couple's home.
A big old tree in Malibu makes the perfect romantic spot for this DIY wedding.
We found a few really cute save the dates this week! One takes up a whimsical, old-fashioned carnival theme, while the other showcases the couple's fluffy pooch:

Compare & Contrast: Super 8 Film Stocks

Whenever we order film for an upcoming Hello Super 8 shoot, there are a whole lot of factors to consider: Is the event indoors or out? What will be the main light source? Will we be shooting at night? What's the color palette going to be? Does the client want a classic or retro look? One of the cool things about super 8 is that there are plenty of amazing film stocks available for us to choose from. Here's a brief comparison of the various super 8 looks that we can achieve using several different--but all beautiful!--film stocks.

Color Negative (Kodak Vision 3; 200 & 500 ASA): This stock is ideal for lower light situations and softer colors & skin tones.
Color Reversal (Kodak 100D): Comparable to Kodachrome, this color Kodak reversal film has a similar look to older 60s/70s stock. The processed film is highly saturated, with a lot of contrast and rich tones--perfect for capturing bold, bright colors and making a dramatic statement.
Black & White Reversal (Tri-X): Black & white reversal also allows for a higher level of contrast than negative film. (What's the difference between reversal and negative? With reversal film, a positive image is imprinted right on the film shot; negative film gets processed into a whole new strip, resulting in the positive print & negatives.)

Bright Sunlight

Bright sunlight is the best friend of reversal film. Here are some examples of processed reversal film, which gives colors a dense, rich, high-contrast appearance.

Low Light

Low light comes out best with a high ASA, so we always opt for negative film. (Reversal requires lots of light to get that big pop of color and can't be used in low light.) Here are some examples of how negative color film performs in low light situations (i.e. when we hit the dance floor!).

We found a lot of unique destination weddings this week, plus an anniversary shoot at our beloved Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. Check out the great eye candy--dresses, cakes, and more--we uncovered.

This Lake Como wedding defines luxury: breathtaking views, intricate stonework, and an elegantly-attired bride and groom.
The Ace Hotel never ceases to be the perfect spot for sun-kissed romance, and this anniversary shoot hits all the right notes--especially with this adorable shot of the couple checking out their own wedding footage on an old-fashioned projector.
A wedding that features vintage cameras as props for the bride and groom is right up our alley.
Michigan couple Echo and Rich chose to get married in a little black chapel in a field in Iceland. Talented Icelandic photographer Bragi Por Josefsson captures the landscape & couple in some extraordinary shots.
Givenchy's newest collection features some dazzling numbers that would be fitting for a haute couture bride.

Let them eat cake! Or... let us eat this berry-topped chocolate cake.
We love bright colors, and the corals & yellows accenting this Southern wedding would be gorgeous on super 8!

This week we found plenty of beautiful and inspirational wedding tidbits, including quite a few weddings that would look spectacular on super 8. Check out our favorite weddings, venues, tuxes, invites, and more!

Happily for this couple, rain on your wedding day is supposed to bring good luck. We shot a rainy day wedding a while back and think "Isn't It a Lovely Day" by Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald makes the perfect accompaniment to images of in-love couples under umbrellas.
This cozy Wisconsin wedding got a bit luckier as far as sunshine goes. We love the atmosphere, especially the warm evening light filtering through the trees (photographed by Jennifer Cress).
You gotta love a man with style. Check out groom Matt's snazzy, Joshua tree suit. The bride reveals to Ruffled: "I think he asked me to marry him mainly to have an excuse to get a custom suit." We have to admit, we'd probably do the same for a suit like this.
A simple and modern Chicago wedding at Prairie Pr oduction is flooded with bright sunlight and would be perfect for shooting on super 8.
Adorable DIY touches abound at this retro backyard wedding. We're smitten with the colorful origami flower centerpieces.
It's always fantastic when couples get creative, and this storybook-style wedding invitation--which details the couple's journey together--goes above and beyond. Artist & groom Giles Timms designed and illustrated his own very cool (and sweet!) invites.

Beyonce's Vintage Videos

We are loving the vintage look of Beyonce's music videos, especially in "Why Don't You Love Me?" Here, Beyonce plays a sassy housewife in a color-drenched retro world. The vibrant sets, wardrobe, and make-up definitely wouldn't pop so beautifully on digital video. Hurray for real film!

In case you missed it, a few years ago Beyonce released a sweet little silent film-style, black & white super 8 music video for her song "Flaws and All." We think super 8 is a perfect match for the playfulness and nostalgia that runs through the clip. Beyonce looks like she's having a lot of fun acting like a modern-day Mary Pickford in front of the camera, and that magical super 8 quality seems to really capture her personality. Celebrating Pride Month with a Wedding in Provincetown

June is Gay and Lesbian Pride Month, as declared by President Bill Clinton in June 2000, and Hello Super 8 got to celebrate in probably the best way ever: by filming a lovely same-sex wedding in Provincetown, MA this weekend. According to Provincetown Magazine, hundreds of couples from all over the world have come to Provincetown, "the gay marriage capital of America," to get married since same-sex marriage became legal in Massachusetts in 2004. Between June and October each year, 10-20 couples per day visit the town office to apply for a marriage license. We were lucky enough to get to capture the beautiful, intimate wedding of Sari & Holly on super 8 film, and we were thrilled to play a small role in supporting marriage equality.

It was great to check out Provincetown--a vibrant, gay-friendly community on the tip of Cape Cod--for the first time. Sari & Holly's wedding took place at the Red Inn, as charming a venue as you could ask for. It's nestled right up against the sea and was the perfect spot for a gathering of 55 close friends and family. The wedding featured gorgeous pink and white peonies all over (our favorites), fantastic food (provided by the Red Inn) and two wonderful officiants. One, Sari's rabbi from Chicago, gave a touching speech about how special it was that all of Sari & Holly's loved ones had traveled all the way to Massachusetts so that their union could be legal.

The celebration ended with wedding guests--an eclectic and fun bunch--dancing the night away under the stars. We can't wait to get started editing together Sari & Holly's super 8 wedding film; their joyous celebration will make a wonderful addition to Hello Super 8's collection. Plus, we're so happy to get the chance to show our support for all couples and look forward to the day when Provincetown (lovely as it is!) no longer needs to be the gay marriage capital.

This week we came across tons of cool weddings, venues, favor ideas, and dresses. Here's a complete round-up of our favorites in each category:

A wedding on a family farm in Texas, photographed by The Nichols, comes complete with red cowboy boots for the bride, a mariachi band, horses, and guacamole. Looks like a rootin'-tootin' (not to mention delicious) good time; wish we coulda been there!
Glamorous design + an old factory = one incredible venue. Check out this wedding at Sodo Park in Seattle.
Green Wedding Shoes features some unique wedding favor CD designs; as if making a mix of great songs to share with family and friends weren't sweet enough, these couples have added a super cool artistic touch to the packaging.

"Meet the Vendor" feature on Hi-Fi Weddings blog

I was thrilled when Ashley, from Hi-Fi Weddings got in touch to A) talk shop about vintage cameras and B) be featured on her awesome website and take her kick-ass music questionnaire. Just to let you know, her site is SO COOL! I happened upon it by way of twitter and was thrilled to find out someone had a dedicated site to music for your wedding! She features awesome eye candy AND great music (my 2 fave topics!). It's a wonderful resource when you're at a loss for what to play at your event. I'm excited to have her great music guide when I'm searching for the perfect track to accompany groovy super 8 images.

Anyway, I could have agonized over her questionnaire, trying to figure out what made me sound cool or what others wanted to hear but I took the old "whatever comes to your head" route and was happy with my answers. Who wouldn't want to see Stevie with Erykah, Lauren, and Jill on back-up with Prince and Snoop opening? Or have a secret fantasy of rocking a mean jazz flute? HA!

This is the sweetest note from a favorite client last year. We had some additional footage to add to their film and sent it for their anniversary a year later. It makes us so happy to make others happy. :)

Our video was perfect before and this latest additional footage has taken it beyond perfection.

Was a fantastic surprise!

I've just watched it ten times and hopefully will not wear it out.

It is amazingly beautiful footage, it seems like those are the best conditions for Super 8 film. The angles and sun flares are so much more interesting than even our photographer managed to capture (as wonderful as he is!!!). Super 8 truly is a magical format isn't it, especially in the right hands ;) . The music of that last song seemed like it was being conducted to our footage too...... you really are super talented.

THANKYOU.... THANKYOU.... THANKYOU! You really have made my day today and made my memories of our wedding day even richer.

Thank-you for taking the time to re-edit our film, I know you didn't have to but I'm so glad you did.

Get Up Close and Personal with Art (we will be!)

Figment NYC is happening this weekend (Friday- Sunday) on Governors Island. What is Figment and why do we think it's so cool? Begun in July 2007, Figment is a participatory arts event that occurs in Boston and New York. For absolutely free, visitors can meet emerging artists and take part in the creative process by jumping into sound installations, riding the Human Weeble Wobble, and hula hooping (just to name a few of last year's exhibitions). Instead of standing behind ropes in a traditional art gallery, you can become an artist or part of the art itself at this innovative event. We think Figment will be a great way to enjoy the warm weekend weather and experience the arts.

We will be heading over with super 8 camera in tow to document all of the colorful fun. Hope to see you there!

Stylish Ace Hotel wedding on 100 Layer Cake

Back in March, we captured the sun-drenched and very relaxed Ace Hotel in Palm Springs on super 8. We thought this retro spot would make the perfect setting for a super cool wedding, and super cool couple Andi & Jarret did just that. We were thrilled to find the details of their Ace Hotel celebration on 100 Layer Cake: Andi & Jarret's wedding day featured a photo shoot by the hotel pool while guests were swimming around and custom beach towels as party favors. We love Max Wanger's photographs, which capture the joy and effortless style of the hotel and the couple on their big day.

Upcoming June weddings (location, location, location!)

Apologies for the lack of posts lately. We've been gearing up for the busy summer wedding season ahead. I'm so so excited about some of the upcoming locations and the amazing possibilities for each of my client's wedding films. The locations alone will make for fantastic settings for each film. But I'm also thrilled about being with each couple's group of close friends and families. I honestly feel so honored to share the day with our clients. It's such an intimate time and I'm truly blessed to have this job creating memories that will last a lifetime (if not longer).

That being said, I wanted to share a couple of my favorite upcoming locations that I will be traveling to in a matter of weeks!

First off is Wave Hill located just outside of Manhattan in a lovely area of the Bronx. I did a site visit with my clients and was blown away by the beauty of the place. It seems to be a best kept secret as it's so close to the city but felt like I was in the English countryside. The Armor Hall (where the reception will take place) was also stunning with high wood beamed ceilings and a stone facade. The grounds are just gorgeous and I can already picture how gorge this film will be, as the bride and groom and equally easy on the eyes.

Next, I'll be traveling to Provincetown, MA at the very tip of Cape Cod. I've never been but have heard wonderful things. The exciting news for me is this will be our first ever same sex wedding. I've been a big supporter of equal rights marriages and am so happy to finally get a chance to document an occasion that I personally support and encourage. The two lucky ladies will have their ceremony at the sweet location, Red Inn right on the water. I know it's going to be beautiful and I expect a heartfelt celebration.

And finally, I'll be heading off to Aspen, Colorado! I'm so excited because it's another location I've never been to and I know will be breath-taking! It's going to be a backyard wedding of the bride's family friends and I've heard it's utterly amazing. There is a stream running through, wild flower fields, and the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop. How could it not be beautiful? The town itself looks so cute and I can't wait to explore. I've also been invited to attend the white water rafting excursion the day before the festivities. Not sure I'll bring my camera along for that but how fun does that sound???

I can't wait for all the adventures and incredible filming opportunities that lie ahead. Be sure to check back for musings on each wedding and their film highlights.

Sinatra House wedding feature on Style Me Pretty

This was one of our favorite weddings to date. The impeccable design by R. Jack Balthazar and Unscene Inc. was so so fantastic. I remember walking into the venue and being completely stunned by the brilliant pop of colors. Those gorgeous lamp shades coupled with the lovely array of vibrant flowers was a feast for the eyes. And you know, I'm a fan of yummy bright colors.

Sundays at the Ace Hotel... new super 8 film!

Last month, I met with David, the events coordinator at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs. He thought that super 8 was the perfect medium to capture the retro coolness of the Ace and I ran with the idea. I came back a couple weeks later with a few rolls of film and my trusty camera and got inspired by the groovy updated architecture, the stunning golden desert light, the endless sea of interesting people, all the cute dogs and the overall great vibe of the place. I had a blast shooting this footage and putting it together!

My hope was to give you a sense of the place and all it's greatness. I can't think of a better way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon... complete with yummy BBQ, deliciously strong drinks, the warm pool, the good tunes and the good times (and ALSO a truly original and fun space for a wedding... hint, hint)!

Tatiana McCabe: superstar super 8 shooter!

I wanted to write a little feature on Hello Super 8 team member Ms. Tatiana McCabe and tell you how much we love her. Tatiana and I were instantly friends when we discovered our interest in working with real film (super 8, 16mm, lomography!). She and I have been working together for a little over a year now and we've got great teamwork. I'm super excited for more events and new endeavors together this year.

In the meantime, I wanted to share a piece of work that Tatiana just completed, as I find it truly beautiful. She had the opportunity to go Mali last January to document the journey of the New York band The Sway Machinery. It was their first trip to Mali and they were there to play at the Festival Au Desert in Timbuktu! While there, Tatiana made this fantastic video of the band, featuring this incredible woman, Khaira Arby, all shot on SUPER 8 FILM!

Glee-ful Hello

Ok, I'm obsessed with a little show called GLEE. If truth be told, I'm a sucker for musicals (and ice skating and gymnastics and So You Think You Can Dance)... yes, my gay boyfriends love me as we can talk about these topics for hours. ;)

Anyway, when I finally saw "Glee" last year my heart skipped a beat. Not only did it have a super cute and amazing cast, it also had incredibly witty and smart writing. The kind of writing that I crave in a TV show about high school kids (think Freaks & Geeks, the Wonder Years, My So Called Life). Not only that, it has really great choreographed, well-sung musical renditions of awesome songs! Thus, a healthy obsession was born.

Sadly, I wasn't even aware that the premiere was starting last night (I've been cable-free in LA for 3 months now), until I saw someone posted about it on twitter yesterday. So of course, one of the first things I did was get my dose of the latest episode on HULU this morning. And boy did it deliver.

BUT, the best part? The show was all about HELLO SONGS! I can't tell you how long I looked for the perfect songs with "hello" in them when I started this company. Funnily enough, they used almost every song I considered in the show. And they FEATURED the song I use for our little teaser on the Hello Super 8 website. SO GREAT! Here's a clip of their promo featuring "Hello Goodbye":

I also had to share their version of Lionel Ritchie's "Hello." I've sort of always wanted to use this song somehow because the lyrics are really pretty, but it has a cheese factor when played to gorgeous super 8 images. But I actually love this version by Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff. Kinda pretty, right? And yeah, a little cheesy, but STILL! I'm into it. Ok, no making fun!

News is Kodak will be discontinuing the classic Ektrachrome 64T Reversal film stock and will be replacing it with 100D (via onsuper8 blog). Also, no more Plus-X black and white... only Tri-X. In this world of every changing technology, I'm just happy Kodak is still supporting the super 8 medium. We must keep it alive!

New York Weddings Magazine

Lovely Oregon super 8 wedding

This was the first project that our new resident Pacific Northwest cinematographer, Wanna Camcam got to shoot. The digital footage was then sent back to the Hello Super 8 headquarters in NY and was edited together with the couple's song choice "I'll follow you into the dark" by Death Cab for Cutie. Even though I wasn't there to film the event, I could still feel exactly what it was like to be there. Something about film does that. It's completely personal and you really get to know the personalities and the true essence of the people on film.

Elizabeth and Linus are both playful and fun together and also obviously deeply in love. My favorite kind of couple! They were married at the picturesque, Arbor School in Tualatin, Oregon. I just love the footage of them on the swings! Enjoy...

I've been out in LA for the last few weeks checking out the scene and making new connections. Next week I'm hitting the road and heading out to Palm Springs where I'll be meeting with a few fabulous hotels to tell them all about us and how much their clients will love super 8 for their mid-century modern oh-so chic events. I can't wait to bask in Palm Springs glory. I might even take my camera out there to shoot some b-roll of some of my favorite spots. I'll keep you posted with any new great finds...

The Power of Super 8 Film

Wedding Crashers report

I had a fantastic time at the Wedding Crashers event on Saturday. There was a great turnout and I have to say, it was very refreshing to see so many cool couples! Usually these fairs are mostly brides but the men came out in full force, representing. I see the trend of couples really wanting to personalize their days to make it all about THEM! And I love that. :) See more photos here.

There were so many unique vendors present. I wished I'd had more time to go around and check out everyone's set up but I was so busy at my own table I hardly had a chance to see what else was out there. I was fortunate enough to be next to Abdi & Nico from 3 Photographers (LOVE THEM!) and Melinda from Lion in the Sun paperie. Great people with amazing businesses. It was so inspiring to be around other vendors doing cool things in this biz.

I reconnected with the amazing Tammy Golson who was helping coordinate that day, Andrea Blau, my fave special event documentarian from Rewind Pictures, and DJ Small Change who played some sweet tunes during the event. I also met the awesomely cool vendors Daniesha, a planner & designer from Wedded Luxe, Allyson who runs the website RealHoneymoons.com (SO CLEVER for those looking for honeymoon destinations!), Ara, the new DC transplant who runs a wonderful wedding and design company called Rock, Paper, Scissors, Kerry the incredible florist from Root Stock & Quade (love their Clinton Hill shop!), Brooklyn photographer Daniel Krieger, the lovely make-up artist Jessa from Blades Natural Beauty, not to mention many more. And two of my favorite bloggers, Jillian from 100 Layer Cake and Vane from Brooklyn Bride also paid me a visit.

It was a really fun event and all around wonderful day. I was so happy to meet some potential future clients and be around all the creative talent from Brooklyn. Let's hear it for NEW YORK!

I'm heading to San Francisco tomorrow to spend the turning of the new year with my closest college girlfriends. I'm ridiculously excited and just wanted to send you all my very best wishes for an extra fabulous new years yourselves... weather it be an intimate affair with loved ones or in a room full of giddy strangers dancing to silly music and kissing each other at the stroke of midnight.

Here's to all good things for everyone in 2010... especially L-O-V-E. I have a good feeling I just may leave my heart in San Francisco.

Attention future brides & grooms: Next month, Brooklyn Based will be hosting an event called The Wedding Crashers, at the super cool Bell House in Gowanus on January 9th. It promises to be something special. Not only will there be interesting discussions about everything that goes into planning a fabulous wedding, there will be food, drinks, music and a handful of amazing Brooklyn based vendors... including Hello Super 8! Ahead of the game for 2010

I've always had a love affair with the color turquoise, and it seemed fitting to have my favorite color represent my company. It is the color of water (my star sign in pisces) and sky (where my dream self floats off to daily) and evokes a sense of peace and tranquility. I also find it to be a vibrant, happy color. So being all those things, I felt like turquoise was the perfect color for the Hello Super 8 brand.

And low and behold, we're ahead of the curve on this one. Pantone says that turquoise will be thee color of 2010! I hope that means it doesn't get played out but let me be the one to say... "I thought of it first!" HA!

The video we got from you and Tatiana is breathtaking. When Keira's mother first suggested getting a videographer for our wedding, I was very skeptical. I had visions of awkward off-the-cuff well-wishes from tipsy family and friends, washed out colors, and shaky frames. When Keira showed me the Hello Super 8 samples on your website, those fears were assuaged. The dvd we got from you is one of my favorite things from our wedding. You and Tatiana did an amazing job capturing the spirit of the moment and how much fun everyone seemed to be having. It gives me such a good feeling to watch the video and think back on how amazing that day was for me. Thank you so much for the care you put into shooting and editing it. I love it.

As I mentioned before, we had an amazing time at Keira & Dan's wedding held in Cambridge, MA last month. They were just the coolest couple and we loved all of their awesome friends and family. It was all about the details, the love between the two of them and most importantly, the fun! They picked out their own songs for the film and I can't tell you how perfect their choices were.

There was a point in time when I used to read the Missed Connections on Craigslist for both for fun and curiosity. I was always fascinated, wondering if said missing person actually felt that connection too, then found the ad, then actually responded, then met the writer and then fell in love (sounds like a movie script waiting to happen).

And of course I always wondered if maybe someone had noticed me and thought we may have had a connection and posted an ad! And I'll admit, I've even looked on it when I thought I had a connection possibly on the Q train, walking our dogs in the park, in the nut aisle in Trader Joes. I'd never have the nerve to actually leave one but it's fun to fantasize.

In a sea of strangers in New York City, it's always nice to have those little innocent, unspoken moments with someone and wonder... could they be the one?

Enjoy this blog that I discovered today. I just love the artful interpretations of the ads illustrated by the talented Sophie Blackall. This brings brings me pure joy!

Venus Magazine Article: DIY filmmaking

I was interviewed along with Amy French (writer/director/actress), Hayley Stuart (indie filmmaker) and Celine Diano (indie film production designer) for Venus Magazine a couple months ago for their do-it-yourself article on filmmaking. We had a great time sharing thoughts, inspirations, and the trials and tribulations on making movies. It's a great read for anyone interested in getting their hands dirty and wanting to learn the art of making films... from commercial to art films to vintage super 8 films!

Fabulous NYC venue: The Norwood

I had the pleasure of attending a super fab wedding last night at the coolest spot ever and wanted to share. The place is a private club called The Norwood and conveniently located on 14th and 8th. It's a full brownstone and each floor is gorgeously decorated. It was the perfect spot for an intimate celebration.

The first floor was a cool lounge/bar area with tons of seating nooks, complete with great art on the walls. There was an lovely garden in the back where softly lit lanterns hung from a huge tree. One flight up was the dining room with big long tables and a kitchen area in the back. And up one more flight was the "club" which had a fantastic bar and little dance floor. Again more cool art and great lighting. Oh and the staff were all very attractive to boot! I never thought I'd be one to want a membership to a private club but hot dang, I wouldn't mind having one there!

Halloween hilarity

I couldn't resist sharing my crazy costume for this year's Great Pupkin Contest (doggy costume contest). I was inspired by the NY landmark, B & H Photo Video... the epic Orthodox Jewish-run digital megastore. Only if you've been, will you truly understand. It's a bizarre place but one where I've spent many hours and many dollars on all the latest camera/video/photo equipment!

I dressed up like one of their awesome employees, complete with wig, beard, green vest, store logo, and photo I.D. That alone was pretty amazing. But to get my dog Arthur in on it, I dressed him up as an old Betamax vide o camera. The costume was titled "B&H Photo Clearance Stock."

I created graphics just like the camera and attached them to a box, then added a handle, an eye-piece, a bike light as the flashing "record" light and the cone of shame became the lens. It was a huge success and the crowd went wild for it. The competition was very stiff this year but we got 2nd place out of 85 dogs!!! We won some great prizes and I was quite pleased. I'm not sure how happy Arthur was about it, but he was a real trooper!

Best Boston Wedding

The season turned last weekend and the winter chill breezed on through, but that didn't stop one of our most favorite weddings ever! Keira and Dan were coolest couple with an amazing circle friends & family. You could tell how much you loved each other and how much everyone loved them and that always makes for an incredible wedding!

Their celebration was held at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center in Cambridge, MA — a lovely performance arts space built in 1814. It had that gorgeous historic charm but they transformed the theater into the hippest affair in town. The color pallet focused on pink dahlias with turquoise accents (soooo pretty!). I couldn't get over how many amazing details were thought through... from tons of great etsy finds to handmade headbands made by Keira's friend.

The ceremony was one of the best I've seen. Humorous, heartful and just plain lovely. I've never seen a groom take a photo from the altar. And I've never seen a bride so giggly and happy. I even shed a tear and fogged up my eyepiece!

We did the Hello Guestbook along with the photographers from Studio Nouveau and the guests went crazy for it. The wedding joy carried on through the night with a heated dance floor set to some great old school tunes. I can't wait to get back all of the footage!

Surreal retro film

I felt compelled to share this. It's an interesting experimental piece from the 60s and has that great vintage look (most likely shot on 16mm, I'm guessing from). I especially like the animated paper cutouts. If you wait until the end, you may be surprised. I was... it actually makes perfect sense but I had no idea one of my heroes created this!

Tatiana and I had the pleasure of attending Michelle and John's wedding in Connecticut a couple of weeks ago and we're waiting on pins and needles to get the footage back. They were such a fun and sweet couple and the setting was divine! The reception was held at The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station (this photo was the view from the balcony).

The lucky pair got the most gorgeous Saturday of the season... perfectly sunny with crystal blue skies and the leaves JUST starting to turn. From the setting to the flowers to the food to the rocking band, it was a fantastic wedding!

We'll be posting footage of the celebration as soon as we get our hands on it from the lab!

Announcing our new addition to the Hello family, Ms. Wanna Camcam. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Wanna is a wonderful cinematographer with a keen eye. Having worked as a camera assistant on feature films under some of the great cinematographers of our day (Roger Deakins and Darius Khondji, anyone?) she is a self-proclaimed "camera nerd" and really knows her stuff. We are ecstatic to have her as part of our team and are thrilled to offer our services to those of you on the left coast.

Vendor Spotlight: Angela Cappetta

Tatiana and I had the absolute pleasure of working with one of the most talented photographer's in NYC last month, Angela Cappetta. She was so much fun to work with and was true to my heart because she shot with real film too (on vintage cameras no less)! We were a little dream team, referring to ourselves as the "art department" for the day.

The groom from the wedding summed it up best by saying: "It felt like you were our oldest friends at the wedding."

Her photography is so unique... she has a truly artistic vision and is by no means your run of the mill wedding photographer. She's got an incredible eye and amazing energy to boot! I can't wait until we can do it again!!
